About Einstein
The Dog Who Found Him.
Old English Sheepdog. Travelling companion. Quiet judge of human foolishness.
Professor Everyman does not say that he found Einstein.
He says Einstein found him.
This is usually said without explanation, which is how the Professor says most important things.
On the surface, Einstein is a large, gentle Old English Sheepdog with a magnificent coat, patient eyes, and a habit of sitting exactly where important papers need to be placed.
But anyone who spends time around him begins to suspect something rather unusual.
Einstein listens differently.
Not like a trained dog waiting for a command. More like an old friend allowing humans to arrive slowly at the obvious conclusion.
The Companion
Einstein travels beside the Professor through libraries, harbours, railway stations, mountain paths, dusty archives, and the occasional suspiciously grand hotel lobby.
The Observer
He has an extraordinary ability to notice character. He approves rarely, disapproves silently, and has never once been fooled by a pompous man.
The Mystery
There are moments when Einstein seems to recognise places he has never been, people he has never met, and danger before it arrives.
More Than A Pet
Einstein is not a mascot.
He does not talk. He does not perform tricks for applause. He does not wear spectacles, solve equations, or behave like a cartoon philosopher.
His wisdom is quieter than that.
He knows when to wait. He knows when to move. He knows when the Professor is pretending not to be tired. He knows which strangers can be trusted. He knows which rooms hold sadness.
And sometimes, when the Professor is uncertain, Einstein simply stands and walks in the direction they need to go.
There are rumours, of course.
That Einstein has appeared in old photographs where he should not be.
That he has found other people before the Professor.
That time behaves differently around certain dogs.
The Professor’s View
The Professor never encourages speculation.
If asked directly whether Einstein is more than he appears, he usually looks over the top of his glasses and says something unhelpful like:
“Most worthwhile creatures are.”
Then Einstein sighs, as if the answer should have been obvious.
